President Weber Nov. 14, 2007

I am pleased to report that today in Long Beach, the CSU Board of Trustees unanimously approved SDSU’s 2007 Campus Master Plan. As you know, San Diego State has been committed to student access and community engagement since we were established in 1897. With the approval of our Campus Master Plan by the Board of Trustees, SDSU has passed an important milestone.

Whether it has been embracing returning GIs after World War II, accommodating the rapid growth of California in the 1960s, or providing educational opportunity to this new generation of Californians, San Diego State has always “stepped up” to the challenge.

The approval of this plan follows an extensive 10-month dialogue between the university and the community, public officials, and civic leaders. While the CSU Board’s decision concludes the environmental review process, SDSU remains committed to working with campus stakeholders and our neighbors as SDSU grows to meet the needs of our community.

As a result of input we received throughout the process, our Campus Master Plan includes significant changes. We substantially increased on-campus student housing and decreased the number of homes proposed for the Adobe Falls faculty and staff housing project. The plan’s approval will result in the request of $6.4 million through the state budget process to pay for SDSU’s fair share of mitigations needed on nearby streets and intersections. And SDSU will also support Caltrans’ efforts to seek $10.1 million for improvements to freeway interchanges that may be impacted as a result of campus development.

Approval of SDSU’s Campus Master Plan ensures that SDSU can continue to serve the community’s higher education needs for future generations of students. On behalf of San Diego State, thank you to all those in the community who supported this important plan.

Stephen L. Weber
President
