SAN DIEGO (Thursday, May 10, 2007) — In response to community input, San Diego State University announced that it is making changes to its Campus Master Plan that will substantially increase on-campus student housing. The addition of 2,976 student beds to the plan will nearly double the existing amount of housing available on campus.

"We have listened to the community and we are responding to their suggestions, one of which was to add more housing on campus," said Anthony Fulton, campus architect at SDSU. "This revised plan is the result of an ongoing dialogue between the university, elected officials and nearby residents."

The largest portion of the housing, three 10-story buildings on the southeast portion on campus, will be built by 2011-12. An additional building on the west side of campus, and student apartments at Villa Alvarado (northeast side of campus), will be constructed by 2025.

In addition to increasing on campus housing, SDSU anticipates that the supply of university-managed housing near the campus will also grow. Currently, the university manages 1,720 apartment-style units within walking distance to campus. Based on changes to the Campus Master Plan and projections for future housing, it is expected that SDSU will control housing for nearly 10,000 students by 2025, consisting of on-campus housing and university-managed housing within walking distance to campus.

SDSU issued a revised Notice of Preparation (NOP) for the 2007 Campus Master Plan Environmental Impact Report (EIR) on April 17, 2007. The revised NOP includes the increase in student housing, as well as a change to the Student Union project and the addition of a university conference center adjacent to Cox Arena. This marks the beginning of another 30-day period in which the university is seeking comments from the public to help determine the issues the EIR will analyze. The Draft EIR is expected to be available for public review and comment in June 2007.

The 2007 Campus Master Plan revision is a comprehensive plan that will allow SDSU to provide increased academic space, student housing and services, and faculty housing to meet growing student demand. It is expected to increase SDSU’s enrollment capacity from 25,000 full-time equivalent students to 35,000 in a smart-planned manner over the next two decades.
