SAN DIEGO (Monday, May 7, 2007) —San Diego State University continues to be in the top 10 universities nationwide for awarding bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics. According to rankings published in this week’s issue of Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, SDSU ranks eighth.
"SDSU is committed to educating diverse students, and our ranking confirms that commitment," said SDSU Provost Nancy Marlin. "Through our preparation and outreach programs, including the Compact for Success, we hope to increase the number of diverse students that receive a degree from our university. We are extremely proud of the ethnic diversity of our students."
The recently released rankings are compiled using information from the 2005-2006 academic year. That year, SDSU conferred bachelor’s degrees on 1,184 students of Hispanic descent. Using the same data, SDSU is ranked fourth in California.
Additionally, SDSU ranks in the top 10 nationally for undergraduate degrees awarded to Hispanics in 4 program areas, including protective services, psychology, public administration and social services.
In 2006, SDSU was ranked ninth for the number of undergraduate degrees awarded to Hispanics.
SDSU was also ranked in the top 25 for master’s degrees conferred to Hispanics by Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, with 175 awarded during the 2005-2006 academic year.
Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education produces the “Top 100 Colleges for Hispanics” rankings annually. The information is based on data provided by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center of Education Statistics. A complete list of the rankings can be found at www.hispanicoutlook.com.
