SDSU Month Commemorates University’s 110th Birthday
“What Moves You?” is focus of 2007 celebration
SAN DIEGO (Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007) — The fifth annual SDSU Month, honoring San Diego State University’s “Minds that Move the World,” kicks off next week and will run throughout the month of March.
This year’s celebration commemorates the school’s 110th anniversary of its founding in 1897. SDSU Month 2007 will feature dozens of arts, academic and athletic events open to the community. Highlights include:
• Explore SDSU — Open House 2007 presented by The San Diego Union-Tribune and Time Warner Cable on March 17. A free open-house event for the community and newly admitted students.
• Associated Students 75th Anniversary Celebration, March 2-3
• Tony Gwynn 2007 Classic, March 10 event at PETCO Park to honor SDSU head coach and baseball Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn.
• Kyoto Laureate Symposium on Thursday, March 15. Speaker Kyoto Laureate Leonard Herzenberg was awarded the 2006 Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology based on his life’s work in developing the Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorter (FACS), which has revolutionized how harmful diseases, including HIV and leukemia, are identified and treated.
• A Taste of the Arts, experience a culinary feast of arts activities during SDSU Month. For just $25 get four tickets to attend a live theatre production, enjoy a musical event or view an art gallery presentation, or mix and match your four entrances any way you want. Come to SDSU via trolley, and get $5 off. Just show your trolley ticket at the SDSU box office to receive the discount.
• “Understanding Globalization,” a lecture series throughout March with experts from around the world, including internationally known author Michael Parenti.
• Border Voices Poetry Faire, March 24 with performances from Robert Pinsky, the U.S. Poet Laureate from 1997 to 2000; Adrienne Rich, winner of a National Book Critics Circle Award; Steve Kowit, author of many poetry collections including “The Gods of Rapture” (2006); and Catherine Yi-yu Cho Woo, SDSU professor emeritus who served on the National Council of the Arts for Presidents George H. Bush and Bill Clinton.
“SDSU Month is a great opportunity to highlight the many contributions being made daily by SDSU’s students, faculty, staff and alumni,” said Jack Beresford, assistant vice president of Marketing and Communications. “We invite everyone in the community to participate and find out what inspires our ‘minds that move the world’ to greatness.”
There will also be special offers from local businesses and organizations to celebrate SDSU Month. One of these, the Rubio’s Aztec Combo, will raise funds for the SDSU Month Scholarship Challenge, which provides financial assistance to some of SDSU’s outstanding students. During March, Rubio’s will donate $1 from every Aztec Combo purchased to the scholarship program. Other Scholarship Challenge partners include Cox Business Services, US Bank, Paetec Communications Inc., and SDC Solutions Inc.
The community is also invited to enter the STA Travel Sweepstakes, in which STA Travel and SDSU are giving away a European vacation package. The sweepstakes asks entrants to answer the question “What Moves You to be an SDSU ‘Mind That Moves the World?’” The deadline to register for the sweepstakes is March 31.
