16, 2005 Nationally syndicated columnist Ruben Navarrette
Jr. will be the keynote speaker at the San Diego State University
Cesar E.Chavez Commemoration Committee Luncheon on Thursday, March
24 in Montezuma Hall.
Navarrette, who recently joined The San Diego Union-Tribune's
stable of columnists, has published more than 200 articles for newspapers
and magazines. His work also appears in The Los Angeles Times, the
Chicago Tribune, the Kansas City Star, the Albuquerque Journal,
The Arizona Republic and The Fresno Bee.
The lunch is an annual celebration of SDSU's diverse
community as it honors the life, legacy, and teaching of Cesar E.
Chavez. It includes the presentation of scholarships to students
whose family members are from a farmworker or other industry background
related to the labor movement to which Cesar E. Chavez dedicated
his life.
Navarrette also is the author of A Darker
Shade of Crimson: Odyssey of a Harvard Chicano, a book about
his experience as one of fewer than 500 Mexican-American students
to graduate from Harvard University.
Recently, he was selected as one of only 20 Americans
to participate in the American Swiss Foundation Young Leaders Conference
in Zurich, a weeklong conference during which he participated in
a panel discussion on the American media.
Navarrette will meet with SDSU students in the
Cross Cultural Center immediately after the lunch, which begins
at 11:30 a.m. The event also features professional mariachi musicians,
a Mexican fiesta-style meal and an educational presentation.
