SAN DIEGO, Wednesday, March 16, 2005 – Nationally syndicated columnist Ruben Navarrette Jr. will be the keynote speaker at the San Diego State University Cesar E.Chavez Commemoration Committee Luncheon on Thursday, March 24 in Montezuma Hall.

His work also appears in The Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Kansas City Star, the Albuquerque Journal, The Arizona Republic and The Fresno Bee.

The lunch is an annual celebration of SDSU's diverse community as it honors the life, legacy, and teaching of Cesar E. Chavez. It includes the presentation of scholarships to students whose family members are from a farmworker or other industry background related to the labor movement to which Cesar E. Chavez dedicated his life.

Navarrette also is the author of “A Darker Shade of Crimson: Odyssey of a Harvard Chicano,” a book about his experience as one of fewer than 500 Mexican-American students to graduate from Harvard University.

Recently, he was selected as one of only 20 Americans to participate in the American Swiss Foundation Young Leaders Conference in Zurich, a weeklong conference during which he participated in a panel discussion on the American media.

Navarrette will meet with SDSU students in the Cross Cultural Center immediately after the lunch, which begins at 11:30 a.m. The event also features professional mariachi musicians, a Mexican fiesta-style meal and an educational presentation.
Tickets for the lunch are $30 each with tables of eight available for $225. For tickets contact Sara Hench at 619-594-4232.

Luncheon sponsors include Aztec Imaging, Mission Janitorial, Office Depot, Office Furniture Installation Systems, Abamex Group, Apple Inc., Toshiba, and Electro Specialty Systems.
