SAN DIEGO, Thursday, April 1, 2004 - Five of San Diego State University's graduate programs ranked in the Top 50 of their categories in new lists U.S. News and World Report will publish in its "America's Best Graduate Schools" 2005 edition that hits its Web site Friday and newsstands Monday.

SDSU's programs for Speech and Language Pathology rose to 22nd, after placing 30th in the category's last update in 2001. Other Top 50 programs in this year's new listings include Entrepreneurship, 28th; Audiology, 36th; Clinical Psychology, 38th; and Social Work, 46th.

Jan Andersen, interim dean of the Graduate Division at SDSU, said she was pleased to see the breadth of programs that received recognition for their excellence in U.S. News' latest rankings. She added that SDSU's graduate programs will continue to evolve to meet increasing professional demands.

"We're enhancing strong graduate programs to keep our students on the leading edge of their fields," Andersen said. "For example, by 2007 audiologists will need a doctorate for full certification. That's why we've established our new joint doctoral degree with UCSD in Audiology, which enrolled its first class last fall."

SDSU also recently started the pilot phase of one of the nation's first joint Ph.D.-MBA programs in molecular and cell biology/life sciences, an interdisciplinary master's degree program specializing in homeland security, and a sports business MBA program partnership with the San Diego Padres.

Other SDSU Top 50 graduate programs in categories that U.S. News & World Report did not update this year include Rehabilitation Counseling, 12th; and Health Services Administration, 35th.

SDSU is the oldest and largest institution of higher education in the San Diego region. Founded in 1897, SDSU offers bachelor's degrees in 79 areas, master's degrees in 67 and doctorates in 14. SDSU's nearly 34,000 students participate in academic curricula distinguished by direct contact with faculty and an increasing international emphasis that prepares them for a global future.
