SAN DIEGO (Friday, Dec. 7, 2007) — San Diego State University received a record 61,492 undergraduate applications for fall 2008, the university announced today. Of those, 49,735 were first-time freshmen applications.
The number of online applications SDSU received during the fall 2008 admission application filing period, Oct. 1 through Nov. 30, is 7.7 percent higher than last fall at the end of the open application period. First-time freshmen applications were also up 6.5 percent.
Last year, SDSU’s total of 58,055 undergraduate applicants was third highest in the nation according to an analysis performed by The San Diego Union-Tribune.
The fall 2008 figures continue the trend of significant annual increases in applications to SDSU since the university adopted enrollment management practices in 1999. As the academic reputation of SDSU students rose so did applications, rising 141 percent in the past eleven years.
"We have to credit our strong academic programs and diverse student life opportunities for such extraordinary student interest in SDSU," said Ethan Singer, associate vice president of academic affairs. "More and more prospective students know that SDSU can provide them with an outstanding university education.”
This record number of applicants bodes well for enrolling yet another class of highly prepared new students next fall, Singer said.
Last fall, incoming SDSU first time freshman had an average high-school GPA of 3.44. This represents an increase from 3.16 a decade ago.
Some of the reasons incoming students have cited for wanting to attend SDSU include the vast academic opportunities, the wide range of majors and, of course, the location, Singer said.
Most students selected for admission will be notified by the end of February. SDSU currently estimates it will enroll approximately 9,200 new undergraduates next fall. SDSU enrolled approximately 9,813 new undergraduates in fall 2007.
San Diego State University is the oldest and largest higher education institution in the San Diego region. Since it was founded in 1897, the university has grown to offer bachelor’s degrees in 81 areas, master’s degrees in 74 areas and doctorates in 16 areas. SDSU’s approximately 35,000 students participate in an academic curriculum distinguished by direct contact with faculty and an increasing international emphasis that prepares them for a global future.
