The free event, hosted by various science departments at SDSU, will showcase the biology department’s Electron Microscope Facility and the rooftop telescopes of the astronomy department, as well as numerous activities of the chemistry, geology and psychology departments.
"Every year, SDSU opens its doors to those interested in learning more about the world around them — from the cells in the human brain to the stars in distant galaxies. Inner Space/Outer Space has something for everyone, whatever their age," said Steve Barlow, biology professor and assistant director of the Electron Microscope Facility.
The "Inner Space" experience includes a visit to the Electron Microscope Facility in the university's Physical Sciences building to see what's invisible to the naked eye, including images of plants and animal life magnified as much as 50,000 times on modern transmission and scanning electron microscopes.
"Outer Space" fans can visit the rooftop of the Physics-Astronomy building, where several telescopes will be focused on the stars. Additionally, a planetarium show will focus on how San Diegans can identify the patterns of heavenly bodies from their own back yards over the course of a year.
Members of the geology department will have several hands-on exhibits, including "prospecting" for minerals at the "Show Me Geology" exhibit or making waves in the oceanography lab. Chemistry’s forensics exhibit features "CSU meets CSI" and psychology has a 3-D interactive brain to explore.
The event is easily accessible from the SDSU trolley stop. There is also free parking available for the event at PS 1, located on the corner of College Avenue and Alvarado Road. Signs will be posted to direct visitors to the science buildings on the southeast side of campus. For more information and campus directions, visit www.sci.sdsu.edu/emfacility.
