Going Green: SDSU Sustainability Initiatives
Food Composting
Any fruits and vegetables that SDSU students pass up in the dining hall are now being put to good use. Food waste goes to the City of San Diego's greenery for composting. Food compost is used in all of campus landscaping.
SDSU Recycle Center
The SDSU Recycle Center is located on the east side of campus across from Cuicacalli. The Center takes alumnium, glass, plastics, paper, ink jet cartridges and mixed recycling. Last year, the center took in 12 tons of recyclable materials. The Recycle Center will open to students, faculty and staff on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am-2pm starting September 4.
Biodiesel Fuel Processor
From French Fries to Fuel. SDSU's Physical Plant and Aztec Shops have teamed up to recycle used cooking oil used and process it into biodiesel. The recycled oil will be turned into biodiesel fuel and used to power landscaping equipment on campus.

SDSU Co-Generation Plant
Built in 1984, today the co-generation plant allows the university to co-generate most of its own energy twice as efficiently as utility energy. Among the projects, solar panels installed on top of the physics-astronomy building run a solar-hybrid lighting system. Last year, the co-generation plant saved the university an estimated $4 million, lowered energy-usage for the campus, and helped produce less costly energy-saving methods for public use.
SDSU Enviro-business Society
The organization has close to 300 members and works with campus entities and student organizations to encourage sustainability initiatives.
