SAN DIEGO Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005 -- San Diego State University President Stephen L. Weber announced today that SDSU has completed its draft NCAA Division I Athletics Certification Self-Study Report. The draft report has been posted on the university Web site for public viewing and comment until Thursday, Sept. 29.

The report is the result of a yearlong, campuswide effort by SDSU to conduct a regular study of its athletics program, as required by the NCAA Division I athletics certification program. Specific areas of focus are academic integrity, governance and commitment to rules compliance, and commitment to equity and student-athlete welfare.

NCAA Division I institutions are required to complete this self-study every 10 years, with an interim status report every five years. The certification program aims to help ensure integrity in the institution’s athletics operations by examining its operations through a comprehensive and broad-based analysis of all facets of the organization. Benefits include increased campus and community awareness of the athletics program, as well as providing an opportunity to identify areas of need and develop plans to address those needs.

After the public comment period closes, the report will be revised as necessary and submitted to the NCAA in early October. An external team of reviewers (peers from other universities, colleges, or conference offices) selected by the NCAA will conduct an on-campus evaluation visit beginning February 12, 2006. The review team reports to the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification, which then determines the university’s certification status and announces that decision publicly.

President Weber appointed Dr. James R. Kitchen, Vice President for Student Affairs, as Chair of the Steering Committee for the self-study. The steering committee and subcommittee members were carefully selected to ensure broad-based campus and community participation in this process. The committees include faculty, staff, administrators, student-athletes, members of the University Senate, and members of the community, with careful attention to diversity of ethnicity and gender.

The self-study steering committee includes Dr. James Kitchen, Vice President for Student Affairs and Chair of the Self-Study; President Stephen Weber; Sally Roush, Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs; Jeff Schemmel, Director of Athletics; Kathy Van Wyk, Senior Woman Administrator in Athletics; Jenny Bramer, Associate Athletic Director; Dr. Roger Caves, Faculty Athletics Representative; Dr. Doug Stow, Chair of the Intercollegiate Athletic Authority; Carolayne Henry, Associate Commissioner for Compliance for the Mountain West Conference; Cheryl Fisher, Director of the Office of Diversity and Equity; Rosa Moreno, Special Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs; Dr. Fred McFarlane, faculty member in the Department of Administration, Rehabilitation, and Postsecondary Education; Lindsey Casey, student-athlete in Women's Basketball; Joe Horiye, community representative; Dr. Fred Hornbeck, Chair of the University Senate; Chris Manigault, President of Associated Students; Dr. Ron King, faculty member in the Department of Political Science; Erica Lopez, student-athlete in Women's Soccer; and Walt Turner, community representative.
