FACULTY/STAFF EXPERTS ON FIRE-RELATED ISSUES
San Diego State University offers the following
experts for interviews or information on topics related to the
San Diego wildfires. To reach these experts or inquire about others,

Fires/Natural Disasters
Pat Abbott, Ph.D., professor of Geological Sciences.
Dr. Abbott is an expert on all types of natural disasters and
has authored book chapters on wildfires in the western United
States.
Environmental Damage/Recovery
Tom Zink, Ph.D., professor of Biology. Dr. Zink
is a program manager for SDSU’s Soil Ecology and Restoration
Group (SERG) and is an expert in restoring habitats (especially
soil) disturbed by natural or man-made causes (including fire),
and environmental threats caused by massive environmental disturbances.
Michael Harding, Director of
SDSU’s Soil Erosion Research Facility. Mr. Harding is an
expert in erosion control issues related to massive fires and
other causes. Harding and SDSU alum Carol Forrest
also run a firm called GeoSyntec, which has vast experience providing
emergency post-fire mitigation and watershed management for various
local, state and federal agencies.
Gene Lamke, Ph.D., professor
and chair of SDSU’s Recreation, Parks & Tourism Department.
Dr. Lamke could talk about natural resource management, vegetation,
and the fires’ effects on tourism in rural communities.
Environmental Health/Quality
Richard Gersberg, Ph.D., professor and director,
Division of Occupational and Environmental Health, Graduate School
of Public Health. Dr. Gersberg is an expert on water quality and
can comment on possible effects of the fires on county water supplies.
Communication/Media Coverage
Peter Andersen, Ph.D., professor, School of Communication.
Dr. Andersen is an expert on public health and disaster communication
via the mass media and other channels.
Local/State/National Government Relations
Glen Sparrow, Ph.D., professor emeritus, Public
Administration and Urban Studies, can comment on the nature of
relationships and mutual aid contracts between local, state and
federal agencies for disaster response and recovery.
Effects on Business/Economy
Carl Winston, director, SDSU Hospitality and
Tourism Management program, can speak about the fires’ potential
effects to tourism in the San Diego region.
