FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SDSU Ranked by U.S. News & World Report
As One of Top International Business Programs
SAN DIEGO, Friday, September 13, 2002- San Diego
State University's international business program continues to escalate
through the ranks of the best in the nation, according to U.S. News
and World Report.
The SDSU undergraduate major ranked 12th on the
magazine's "America's Best Colleges 2003" list, up from
15th last year. The rankings were posted today and will be on newsstands
shortly.
"Our international business program is not
only one of the largest in the country, it serves as a model to
other schools for its innovation and relevance," noted Gail
Naughton, dean of the SDSU College of Business. "We continue
to move up in the rankings and aim for top 10 next year."
The international business major at SDSU enrolls
up to 750 students who complete a combination of business courses,
foreign language and regional studies, plus study abroad and an
international internship. The program is offered by the College
of Arts and Letters in conjunction with the College of Business
at SDSU.
"The program is one of SDSU's centers of excellence
that reflects many aspects of the university's mission - it's international,
it's interdisciplinary, and it's community-based," said Paul
Strand, dean of the College of Arts & Letters. "I'm very
proud of everyone involved with it."
SDSU Provost Nancy Marlin said it was gratifying
to see that the hard work of the program's faculty and staff, as
well as the program's rigorous standards, are being recognized nationally.
"The program's study abroad requirements,
and its emphasis on learning language and culture in addition to
business skills, give our students the highest quality educational
experience," Marlin said.
International experience is more important than
ever in light of today's global economy, said SDSU President Stephen
L. Weber.
"Having highly skilled leaders and professionals
in international business is critical to the future of San Diego,"
he said. "Our proximity to Latin America and the Pacific Rim
means we will always need people who know how to build beneficial
relationships beyond our borders."
The International Business major falls under the
auspices of SDSU's Center for International Business Education and
Research (CIBER). The center recently received nearly $1.5 million
over four years from the U.S. Department of Education to continue
its research and development mission as a "center of excellence
in international business education."
With a mandate to enhance international business
education and to research methods to help make U.S. business more
competitive overseas, the SDSU CIBER, one of six original centers
funded in 1989, is now part of a group of 30 of the most prestigious
business schools in the nation.
In addition, the Center engages in a host of research,
faculty and curriculum development projects, collaborates with trade
and export development groups locally and regionally, and consults
with universities across the nation on ways to improve international
business education.
According to David Earwicker, CIBER managing director,
new projects funded by the grant may include interdisciplinary graduate
programs in Asia and Latin America; internships in state and federal
commercial posts across the globe; intensive workshops on business
policy and the environment in Asia, Latin America and the Middle
East; and faculty development initiatives on language, business
and culture in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America.
San Diego State University is the oldest and largest
higher education institution in the San Diego region. Founded in
1897, SDSU has grown to offer bachelor's degrees in 78 areas, master's
degrees in 62 areas and doctorates in 14. SDSU's more than 33,000
students participate in academic curricula distinguished by direct
contact with faculty and an increasing international emphasis that
prepares them for a global future. For more information log on to
