   SDSU's disaster relief efforts to-date include:
  • Offering shelter to evacuees at Peterson Gymnasium.
    • Campus update: Vice President Sally Roush's Sept. 16, 2005 message to SDSU faculty, staff and students.
    • Campus update: President Stephen L. Weber's Sept. 8, 2005 message to SDSU faculty, staff and students.
    • Campus update: President Stephen L. Weber's Sept. 6, 2005 message to SDSU faculty, staff and students.
    • Frequently Asked Questions regarding SDSU’s offer to establish a shelter at Peterson Gym.
  • Providing technical resources to disaster recovery and relief operations.
  • Enrolling dozens of undergraduate and graduate students from Gulf Coast colleges and universities that have been shut down by Hurricane Katrina.
    • As of Sept. 22, 2005: 185 students/parents have contacted SDSU, 90 applications have been received and 36 students have enrolled. At this time, no additional students are being accepted for the Fall 2005 semester.
    • Campus update: Provost Nancy A. Marlin's Sept. 9, 2005 message to SDSU faculty and staff regarding Katrina-related admissions.
    • Feature: Jennifer Powell, new SDSU freshman displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
  • Fundraising and volunteer efforts
     
      Shelter Operations training Nearly 150 SDSU students, staff and faculty attend American Red Cross "shelter operations" certification course at SDSU on Sept. 13, 2005.

    Completion of this course was required to volunteer in evacuee shelters.

    • Aztecs Helping Aztecs: Caring for Our Own. Associated Students and Student Affairs sponsored a Hurricane Relief Day on Sept. 20.
      • Donation centers: Volunteers at Aztec Center, the Business Administration building, Cuicacalli Hall and West Commons collected donations for
        • Scholarships for new SDSU Hurricane Katrina students.
        • Supplies for the American Red Cross. The following items were collected:
          • Water
          • Hygiene/toiletry products (toothpaste, soap, shaving cream, etc.)
          • New toys (packaged items only)
          • New school supplies (packaged items only)
          • New clothing for adults, children and babies
          • Non-perishable food (such as canned, dried food)
    • KPBS Bake Sale on Sept. 9, 2005 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • Raising $15,300 at the SDSU-UCLA football game on Sept. 3 to aid the relief effort
