SDSU hosts celebration of Native American culture

WHAT: An intertribal ceremony featuring dancers dressed in the tradition of their respective tribes is the highlight of the 28th Annual San Diego State University Pow Wow, a two-day celebration of Native American culture.

Members of tribes from the San Diego region and beyond including the Kumeyaay, Luiseno, Hochunk, Navajo, Pala, Pueblo and Pomo will be in attendance. Attendees can sample a variety of native foods, enjoy native music and visit arts and crafts booths.

WHEN: The colorful intertribal dance ceremonies are scheduled for Friday, March 26, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, March 27, at 1 p.m.

WHERE: Aztec Center on the SDSU campus. Ample free parking is available in lots G, H and I on the east side of campus off College Avenue.

BACKGROUND: Pow Wows have many different aspects, including the power and endurance of an athletic event, the grace of ballet, the color and majesty of musical theater, the emotion of a family reunion, the spirituality of a prayer meeting and the variety of a craft festival. The event is sponsored by several SDSU organizations including the Native American Student Alliance, the Department of American Indian Studies, Associated Students, the Student Recruitment and Retention Board, and the Cultural Arts and Special Events Board.
