Two SDSU Health-Related Programs Named to ‘US News’ Best Graduate Schools’ List

Two San Diego State University graduate programs are among the nation’s best, according to a recently-released study by "U.S. News and World Report," which rates America’s best graduate schools in the health disciplines.

SDSU’s rehabilitation counseling program, offered by the College of Education’s Department of Administration Rehabilitation And Post-Secondary Education, ranked eighth among the top 20 in its field. The University’s graduate program in speech pathology was ranked 38th among the top 50 schools surveyed. Speech pathology is offered by SDSU’s Department of Communicative Disorders, under the College of Health and Human Services. The 1998 marks the first time graduate programs in speech pathology and rehabilitation counseling have been included in the U.S News rankings of America’s Best Graduate Schools. The University’s rehabilitation counseling program is the only exclusively master’s program to achieve the top-10 distinction and the only west coast program named to the top 20. SDSU’s program tied with George Washington University and Illinois Institute of Technology and placed ahead of Gallaudet University of Washington D.C.

"The ‘U.S. News’ distinction provides recognition for 25 years of effort by faculty and students working hard to helping people with disabilities to become independent," Dr. Fred McFarlane, chair of the department of administration, rehabilitation and post-secondary education, emphasized.

For the past decade, "U.S. News" has provided prospective students with a distinctive tool to help them make important choices about pursuing higher education. Schools are measured using objective data and reputational ratings. It is the only independent, data-based assessment available of the nation’s colleges and universities, according to the magazine. The 1998 "America’s Best Graduate Schools" guidebook is on news stands now.
