MEDIA ADVISORY : SDSU PRESIDENT PRINCIPAL PLAYER IN

JUNIOR HIGH COLLEGE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

San Diego State University president Steven Weber will be the featured

guest as Granger Junior High School in National City kicks off its annual campaign to emphasize the importance of higher education. Weber will assume the honorary title of Principal for a Day as he visits with students, including a group of 7th graders anxious to show him the innovative Internet research project they are working on. The school’s Show Choir has also prepared a special program in honor of his visit.

The invitation by Granger to the SDSU chief executive is part of the countywide Principal for a Day program as well as another element of the partnership between the junior high and the largest campus in the California State University system. SDSU students have long been a part of Granger’s “College Awareness Week” and students from the junior high have been invited to attend special programs at the university’s campus.

Weber said he hopes his visit will help reinforce the junior high’s motto of “College Starts at Granger.”

“Some of these kids may not think of college as a natural step for themselves,” he commented. “Through this type of involvement at Granger, we’re trying to create a mind set that a college education is important to the future of every young person.”

Dr. Weber is scheduled to be at Granger Junior High, 2101 Granger Ave., National City, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 19.

Interviews with Dr. Weber can be arranged by calling Timothy McKernan at (619)
