SDSU Prof Offers ‘Inside Story’ on the Oscars
Want to know the lowdown on the Academy Awards? Dr. Michael Real, director of San Diego State University’s School of Communications, has the answers.
In researching his book, "Super Media: A Cultural Studies Approach," Real interviewed the directors and producers of "The Oscars." As a result of his research, he can discuss:
· Behind the Scenes -- What on-the-spot decisions are made during the telecast? How do they handle emergencies? How do they keep the "thank yous" to a minimum?
· Social Aspects – How widely the show is viewed around the world? Who watches and why? What are the most popular and unpopular aspects of the program?
· Oscar Trivia and History -- Do you know the myth of how Oscar got his name? When were the first Oscars awarded and who were the winners? When did radio and television coverage begin?
(end)
Real can be reached at his office, (619) 594-4255 or home, (619) 755-3060.
PLEASE NOTE: On March 3, the night of the telecast, he will be at Oscar Night, a fund raiser for the Visual Arts Foundation, benefiting local student film makers. The event, from 5:30 to 11 p.m at Seau’s Restaurant in Mission Valley, is the only Oscar-related event in San Diego County officially sanctioned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Tickets are $20-$30. For information, call the restaurant at (619) 291-7328.
