‘How Latinos View Latinas’ Subject of Lively Discussion at San Diego State, Monday, April 20
WHAT: How do Latinos view Latinas? San Diego State faculty, staff, students and community leaders will weigh traditional Mexican versus American values in a roundtable discussion. Men and women on campus have discussed the subject "in whispers" but they have never confronted the issues in open dialogue, according to Gus Chavez, director of SDSU’s Office of Educational Opportunity and Ethnic Affairs, who will serve as moderator. If comments are similar to those voiced by Latino professionals in a March 1998 Los Angeles Times article (flyer attached), the discussion will be heated and the views will be controversial.
WHEN: Noon to 1:30 p.m., Monday, April 20
WHERE: The Backdoor, Aztec Center
PARTICIPANTS:
· SDSU Students: Arturo Cervantes, Martina Palomares, and Claudia Cuevas
· Gonzalo Rojas, director of SDSU Student Outreach Services
· Dr. Rudy Jacobo, professor, Chicano/Chicana Studies at SDSU
· Carmen Sandoval, manager of community relations for the San Diego Transit
Authority, and an SDSU alumni
· Gracia Pick, community leader and retired college professor
BACKGROUND: The number of Latinas enrolling and graduating from SDSU exceeds their male counterparts. "We need to ensure that their campus experiences prepare them for the professional world," Chavez says. The discussion is part of "Campus Conversations: The Realities of Diversity Series," sponsored by the SDSU Educational Opportunity Program\Ethnic Affairs.
