Job Picture Bright For SDSU Class of ‘98

As they don their caps and gowns for commencement ceremonies, May 23 and 24, San Diego State’s newest grad’s have one more reason to smile. The current job picture for the class of 1998 is the rosiest it’s been in a decade, according to Judy Gumbiner, director of SDSU Career Services.

This year, employers held 10,600 on-campus interviews at SDSU compared with 10,300 last year. In fact the 1997-98 career year at SDSU was the best ever since the end of the last decade when recruitment hit an all-time high with some 13,000 interview.

While Gumbiner acknowledges that there is no doubt that technical majors are in exceptional demand, she stresses that many employers are less restrictive about academic degrees than in past years and are willing to consider graduates in any major.

Recruiters have marketed their in more traditional ways such as direct mailings and participating in and sponsoring career fairs. "We don’t encourage students to just take the highest offer, Gumbiner said. "It’s important that they make sure that the corporate culture matches their personal values."

SDSU operates a full-service, state-of-the-art career center which is available to students and recent graduates at no charge. Full and part-time openings are listed on the internet. Services are also available to alumni for a modest fee.
