SDSU PROFESSOR RECOGNIZED FOR HEBREW SCHOLARSHIP

Risa Levitt Kohn, Ph.D, assistant professor of religious studies at San Diego State University, was named recipient of the Regional Scholar Award at the joint western regional meeting of the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature.

“Ezekiel and the Torah: Authority in the Crisis of Exile,” a paper based on Levitt Kohn’s doctoral thesis, is among winners from eight other regions that will be considered for the National Scholarship Award the groups will announce at their joint meeting next November in Tampa, FL. Levitt Kohn said the work examines the biblical book by the prophet Ezekiel, who was active during the Exile when Israelites were overrun by Babylonians. “This was at a time when the work of canonizing the early books of the Bible was being done,” she said. “Ezekiel saw himself as a kind of Moses, fabricating a new national religious culture to meet the needs of Israel in Exile."
