SDSU Fitness Clinic for Physically Disabled A Real ‘Win-Win’ Opportunity Staying fit offers challenges for all of us…But what do you do if you’ve suffered a severe disability or injury such as stroke, multiple, or head trauma?
At San Diego State, a special fitness program pairs those with unique and severe needs with student trainers majoring in kinesiology. The result: everyone wins.
Participants -- who range in age from 9 to 87-- gain one-to-one-support while building strength and endurance necessary to remain independent. Students gain valuable hands-on skills through an applied learning experience.
The workout room offers fitness equipment similar to your local gym and the fees are less that you’d expect to pay for a professional trainer, according to Dr. Peter Aufsesser, administrative director, who founded the program in 1983. Participants work out Mondays through Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 3:15 p.m., and 7 to 8:15 p.m.
We invite your coverage of this unique program. To arrange an on-camera interview or to obtain additional information on this nationally-recognized program, contact Dr. Aufsesser at (619) 594-1917.
