SDSU to Host Student Engineering Competition
More than 600 civil engineering students from 17 universities will vie in a series of competitions as SDSU hosts the Pacific Southwest Regional Conference of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), to be held April 1-4, at the Four Points Sheraton. Competitions include concrete canoe races (at Lake Murray) and constructing scale model steel bridges under strict time constraints. The Conference will also feature “Engineering Jeopardy,” a chance for the students to exhibit their academic understanding of the profession.
The competition is heated, but this is really a chance for a bunch of future engineers to show that math and science is can be a lot of fun,” said Mike Stewart, conference director and a junior at SDSU. “It allows us to broaden our perspectives, to see the kinds of projects being done at other universities.”
Stewart described the conference as a “huge project for the host school. ASCE give us some broad guidelines, but we are responsible for every aspect of planning. There are 20 regional conferences every year, and each one is different. This is SDSU’s chance to show the high caliber program we have here.” ___________________________
