San Diego State University Commencement, May 23 and 24

San Diego State University’s ninety-ninth commencement will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 23 and 24, with most ceremonies taking place in the new Cox Arena at Aztec Bowl. (See complete schedule, separate page)

More than 9,000 students have applied for degrees or teaching credentials: 6,654 for bachelor’s degrees; 1,761 for master’s degrees; 45 for doctoral degrees; and 900 for teaching credentials for a total of 9,360. Overall, about 70 percent of those applying are expected to graduate.

The valedictorian, with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, is Kyle Marston, who will receive a bachelor of science degree in accounting.

Three honorary doctor of humane letters degrees will be awarded in separate ceremonies to distinguished individuals for their contributions to communication,public service, and education: Arthur Barron, alumnus and retired chair of Time Warner International; Art Linkletter, alumnus and radio and television personality; and Rev. Vahac Mardirosian, founder of the Parent Institute for Quality Education.

Tickets are required for admission to the ceremonies of the largest colleges: Arts and Letters, Business Administration, Professional Studies and Fine Arts, and Sciences. These were distributed to students last month. Tickets are not required for admission to the ceremonies of the other colleges.

Commencement ceremonies of all the colleges will be broadcast live on Cox Cable channel 24, Cox Cable North channel 18, and Southwestern Cable channel 16. Ceremonies also will be shown on closed-circuit television in the Don Powell Theatre on campus. No tickets are necessary.

The Imperial Valley Campus will hold its commencement at 7 p.m., on Thursday, May 21, at the IVC campus.

A special Black Baccalaureate Service will be held at the Bayview Baptist Church, 6126 Benson Avenue, San Diego, on Friday, May 22. Call 619/594-6531 for further information.
