SDSU TO HOST EXHIBIT OF

LEGENDARY FEMINIST CARTOONIST

In celebration of Women’s History Month (March), the Department of Women’s Studies at San Diego State University is sponsoring an exhibit featuring the work of acclaimed feminist cartoonist Bülbül. The exhibit of approximately 75 of the artist’s works plus a cartoon quilt opens February 26 at Love Library on the SDSU campus and will run through the end of March. There is no charge and the public is welcome.

Bülbül, the pseudonym of artist Genny Guracar, is the German name of a bird that is often caged because of its beautiful singing voice. Her satire of issues central to the women’s movement, including health care, education and the changing roles of women in society, has amused and provoked readers of feminist, labor, senior and alternative publications for three decades. Exhibits of Bülbül’s work have previously been held at Stanford University and the University of British Columbia.

"Bülbül does an outstanding job of using humor to shed light on serious subjects," said Patricia Huckle, professor of women’s studies at SDSU. "This retrospective is more than just recognition of her creative genius. It is quite literally a 30-year review of the struggles of women, seniors and other under-represented members of our society."
