Find out what they tell us about the Universe
Spectacular images from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have enthralled millions of people throughout the world, but what is their significance? What do they tell us about the Universe?
For an extraordinary opportunity to learn about the findings of the HST, the public is invited to an illustrated lecture, "Cosmic Vision: What is the Hubble Space Telescope telling us about the Universe?" by Dr. Michael Shara, of the Space Telescope Science Institutute, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, in the Chemistry-Geology Building, room 333, of San Diego State University. Admission and parking are free.
Shara, familiar to many CNN viewers for his commentary during HST refurbishment missions, is head of the Science Program Selection Office, the key player in determining which of the 1500 annual proposals to use the HST get selected and allocated time. As such, he has the ultimate insider’s knowledge of how the Hubble is being used and how the scientific results can be maximized.
An enthusiastic teacher and Hubble spokesman, he also is an active researcher with more than 100 papers published in refereed journals. He earned a Ph.D. in astrophysics from Tel-Aviv University in Israel, and an M.Sc. in astronomy and a B.Sc. in physics and mathematics from the University of Toronto.
Shara’s presentation marks the annual John Schopp Memorial Lecture sponsored by the Department of Astronomy and the Mount Laguna Observatory Associates of San Diego State University.
