Announces Spring Schedule of Events
The Center of Asian Studies at San Diego State University has announced a series of events designed to promote understanding of Asian politics and culture. Unless otherwise noted, the events are free and open to the public and are held at SDSU’s International Student Center, 5433 55th Street. Parking is available adjacent to the Center. Wednesday, March 11 at 3:30 p.m. “Fashioning a Culture of Diligence and Thrift: Savings and Frugality Campaigns in 20th Century Japan.” Lecture by Princeton University Professor Sheldon Garon. A dinner in Professor Gabon’s honor will follow the lecture.
Saturday, March 21 at 10:30 a.m. “Indian Social and Cultural Values as Seen by Indian American Authors.” Indian-American writers Ginu Kamani (“Junglee Girl”) and Nirmala Moorthy (“Maya”) will offer their insights on a symposium co-sponsored by the San Diego Indian American Society. A book signing and a lunch in honor of the speakers will follow.
Saturday, April 18 at 3 p.m. “Indian Music and Dance from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.” Smith Recital Hall on the SDSU campus. This program of music and dance features acclaimed musician and composer Dr. Gopal Marathe and Dr. Purna Patnaik, secretary of the Center for World Music in San Diego. Co-sponsored by the San Diego Indian American Society and the the SDSU Department of Music and Dance.
Monday, April 20 at 4 p.m. “Asian Economic Crisis: What to Do About It.” Lecture by Professor Chalmers Johnson, President of the Japan Policy Research Institute and recognized expert in East Asian politics.
