SDSU lecturer appointed to national post for alcohol and drug prevention
Louise Stanger, a lecturer in SDSU's School of Social Work, was one of 22 people from across the country appointed to serve as a Center Associate for the Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention, a program established by the U.S. Department of Education to support alcohol and other drug prevention efforts at colleges and universities.
During her two-year appointment, Stanger will train alcohol and drug prevention program specialists at higher education institutions; represent the Center at events across the country; and serve as a resource to campuses and Center staff who are seeking advice regarding implementation of substance abuse prevention programs. She will also be an editorial reviewer of several publications in the field.
At SDSU, Stanger is director of the Student to Student peer education program which teaches college students about possible consequences of using drugs and alcohol. Participants include leaders of fraternities, sororities and campus organizations.
She also developed and implements "Smart Tips," an aggressive marketing campaign funded with the largest grant ever awarded to a university by the U.S. Department of Education for substance abuse prevention. "Smart Tips" public service announcements encouraging sober graduations are currently airing on local radio stations.
Stanger's efforts have earned her numerous awards, including a 1995 "Women Who Mean Business" award from the San Diego Business Journal. In 1992, she was honored with the San Diego County Citizen Recognition Award in the educator category for her work during Red Ribbon Week, a week-long celebration in schools throughout the country to encourage the "say no to drugs" message. At the University, she is a three-time recipient of SDSU's Quest for the Best award and a 1992 Outstanding Undergraduate Faculty Award honoree for the College of Health and Human Services.
In the community, Stanger presents workshops at local high schools and is a member of the San Diego area Intercollegiate Prevention Consortium, a group of universities working together to educate college students about the effects of drugs.
Stanger is a resident of La Jolla.
