Rape defense instructors participate in certification training at SDSU starting today
This certification course is offered by the largest rape defense instruction program in the country
Men and women from throughout Southern California, Idaho and Oklahoma who will teach rape defense courses in their communities are at
San Diego State University this week for a three-day certification training.
This program, called Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D), is the largest organized program in the country for defense training with more than 1500 instructors teaching throughout the United States.
The 30-hour training course will teach the soon-to-be certified instructors defense techniques against rape and how to teach those skills in classes. Participants are from the sheriff's and police departments of Salinas and Riverside and from the campuses of Biola University, North Eastern Oklahoma University, Idaho State University, USC, and SDSU.
The course will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting today, Monday, June 9, and continuing through Wednesday, June 11. The location is SDSU's Tula Community Center, 6126 Montezuma Road. Tula Community Center is attached to SDSU's Tenochca Residence Hall.
A "dynamic simulation" will take place on Tuesday, June 10 at 7 p.m. Instructors of the training course will be outfitted in fully-padded suits and let the trainees try out their newly learned skills, including kicks, strikes, not-so-friendly bear hugs and chokes.
Larry Nadeau, the founder of the course, is present at this week's instructor certification training.
The R.A.D. program is offered nationwide at more than 350 universities
and communities. California currently has programs at SDSU; CSU San Marcos; Fresno State University; CSU Stanislaus, USC, Biola University and CSU Hayward. The course has been offered for the last two years at SDSU with more than 180 participants completing the course.
