Pieces of SDSU's history showcased at public library during April
An exhibition featuring photographs, memorabilia and artifacts from SDSU's 100-year history is on display during the month of April at San Diego's Central Library, located at 820 E Street in downtown.
Called "SDSU: A Century of Learning," the display is organized by the SDSU Production Center for Documentary and Drama in consultation with SDSU archivist Lyn Olsson.
Approximately 100 photographs and publications dating back to 1897 are in the exhibition, including the first Summer School Bulletin from 1899, Student Handbooks which span back to the 1920s, and early textbooks for student teachers developed by the Normal School which eventually became San Diego State University. Other artifacts include a red-and-white feathered Aztec cheerleader headdress from the 1940s, minutes of the first Athletic Association meeting, fraternity memorabilia from the 1920s, and a 1911 bronze sundial that was located in front of the Normal School.
This display is part of SDSU's centennial year celebration. Many of the photographs were used for a centennial year video produced by the Production Center. The exhibition is in the downtown library "because we would like the entire San Diego community to join us in celebrating SDSU's 100 years," said Jack Ofield, director of the Production Center/SDSU's filmmaker in residence.
Library hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The library is closed on holidays.
