From Jewish Gauchos to Jewish Writers, Lecture Series Concludes
The following five presentations conclude the New Perspectives in Judaic Studies Lecture Series for spring 1997. All lectures are free and open to the public. They take place on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. in room 100 of Nasatir Hall at San Diego State University.
April 2 "The Yidische Gauchos," a documentary film about the Jewish agricultural communities in Argentina, narrated by Eli Wallach. The director, Mark Freeman, will be present to discuss the movie and answer questions.
April 9 "Miriam and the Israelite Prophetic Tradition," by Professor Ita Sheres of SDSU. Dr. Sheres is the author of two books on Bilblical subjects. His lecture is the Dorsha Wallman Lecture on Modern Torah Interpretation.
April 16 "Tunisian Jewish Proverbs," by Professor Isaac Yetiv of the University of Akron. Dr. Yetiv is an authority on North African Jewish literature.
April 23 "The Impossibility and Necessity of Being a Jewish Writer," by Professor Raymond Federman of the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Federman is the author of more than 20 books, including "Sam Changed Tense" (poems in homage of Samuel Beckett) and "The Supreme Indecision of the Writer."
April 30 "Saul Bellow as Jew and Jewish Writer," by Professor Ben Siegel of California State Polytechnic University. A specialist in literature and religion, Dr. Siegel has written books on Isaac Bashevis Singer, Sholem Asch, and Saul Bellow.
