SDSU Names New Dean of Undergraduate Studies
Geoffrey W. Chase Will Start in January 2002


SAN DIEGO, Friday, Aug. 24, 2001- San Diego State University today announced its new dean for the Division of Undergraduate Studies. Geoffrey W. Chase, currently the associate provost of Undergraduate Studies at Northern Arizona University, will take over the position in January 2002 when Carole Scott, the present dean, retires.


Chase holds a Ph.D. in Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and served as a faculty member at Miami University in Ohio before moving to Northern Arizona University. Prior to his current position, he served as a faculty member responsible for directing the English Composition Program, as chair of the English Department and as interim director of the University Honors Program.


"I am delighted that Dr. Chase will be joining us," said Nancy Marlin, SDSU provost. "His experience with accreditation, honors programs, general education and assessment be will of great benefit to our university, and I anticipate he will make significant contributions that will enhance our outreach and student retention."


Chase was a Fulbright Scholar in Finland, and his scholarly work addresses critical reading and writing as well as environmental sustainability. Chase's faculty appointment will be in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing.
