SAN DIEGO, Thursday, March 22, 2001 - For the third consecutive year, San Diego State University ranks as one of the top institutions of higher learning for Hispanics. Rankings of the top 25 such colleges and universities appearing in Hispanic magazine's March issue put SDSU on the list that also includes UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
"We are proud to be included on this listing and we believe it is a clear indication of SDSU's commitment to diversity," said SDSU President, Stephen L. Weber. "SDSU is dedicated to providing a learning environment where students from all backgrounds, abilities and perspectives can thrive academically and gain the skills needed to succeed in life."
Hispanic magazine pointed out some examples of SDSU's long-time involvement with the Hispanic community, including being home to the oldest department of Chicano/a studies in California and the Institute of Regional Studies of the Californias, which focuses on transborder environmental and business issues.
The magazine considered several factors in determining the rankings, including percentage of Hispanics graduating in 2001, academic rankings, percentage of Hispanic students and faculty, student organizations, and minority recruiting and support programs.
San Diego State University is the oldest and largest higher education institution in the San Diego region. Since it was founded in 1897, SDSU has grown to offer bachelor's degrees in 76 areas, master's degrees in 59 areas and doctorates in 13. SDSU's 31,000 students participate in academic curriculum distinguished by direct contact with professors and an increasing international emphasis that prepares them for a global future.
