SAN DIEGO, Tuesday, August 07, 2001-- Tamara McLeod, executive director of professional development for SDSU's College of Extended Studies, is the new elected president of the SDSU Alumni Association for 2001-02.

McLeod graduated from SDSU in 1972, but has continued to stay involved in the university. McLeod said SDSU has provided a base for many of her personal and professional endeavors, and she hopes to bring other alumni back to the university so they can experience the rewards that she has enjoyed.

"SDSU was my springboard for many personal and business relationships that endure today," said McLeod. "SDSU is interwoven into the fabric of my life."

McLeod said increasing volunteer involvement with the 11,000-member Alumni Association and SDSU will be a major focus for this year's executive committee.

Matt Dathe, '90, will serve as president-elect for the 2001-02 year. He will take over the reigns as president for the 2002-03 year. He has donated many hours to the university since he graduated and said volunteering helps make SDSU stronger, and more
visible to the community.

"It's important to give back to any organization that has helped me along the way. Plus, I have a good time doing it," Dathe said.

Jim Herrick, Executive Director of the Alumni Association says the board members are a vital part of the university's success.

"Volunteerism and community participation are the residual effects of an SDSU education," Herrick said. "It is a tribute to the institution that our board of directors and executive committee for the Alumni Association are so determined to contribute to the betterment of SDSU."

The SDSU Alumni Association consists of a board of volunteers, led by the executive committee. Other members of the new executive committee are: Erica Opstad, '93, vice president for U.S. Bank; Joe Horiye, '92, president of the San Diego Community Housing Corporation; Davene Gibson, '68, retired associate general manager of the SDSU Foundation; Barbara Hall, '86, client relations manager for San Diego Data Processing Corporation; Jerry Dressel, '76 president of Dressel Financial Services; and Bill Trumpfheller, '87, president of Nuffer, Smith, Tucker Public Relations.

The Alumni Association serves to foster a spirit of loyalty to the university through alumni membership and special events.
