SDSU Hires Manager of Government and Community Relations
SAN DIEGO, Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001 - San Diego State University has hired Steven C. Collins as Manager of Government and Community Relations in the university's Marketing & Communications department in the division of University Advancement.
He comes to San Diego State University with more than a decade of experience developing, managing and implementing government and community relations programs in the San Diego region.
"Steven's background in government and community relations in San Diego County is ideal for helping San Diego State University build stronger relationships," said Theresa Mendoza, vice president for University Advancement. "Steven is a consummate professional and an outstanding addition to our team."
For the past five years, Collins managed government and community relations programs at the San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA), the public agency responsible for importing up to 95 percent of San Diego County's water supply.
At the SDCWA, Collins developed a legislative roundtable program that solidified the agency's relationship with members of San Diego County's state legislative and congressional delegations. The program played an integral role in the agency's legislative successes in recent years.
Prior to that, Collins was the government and community relations representative for Cox Cable San Diego (now Cox Communications) for eight years. At Cox, Collins produced, launched and co-hosted Cox's "Local Leaders" public affairs program, and he created the company's "Teacher Tribute" and annual "Salute to Teachers" programs. Both programs won national Cable Ace awards.
"I have worked in government and community relations for a long time, so when the opportunity came along to be a part of the SDSU community, I ran after it," Collins said. "Lucky for me I caught it. Over time I've come to recognize first-rate institutions that work hard to serve people and make a difference. SDSU is one of them."
San Diego State University is the oldest and largest higher education institution in the San Diego region. Since it was founded in 1897, SDSU has grown to offer bachelor's degrees in 78 areas, master's degrees in 61 areas and doctorates in 13. SDSU's more than 32,000 students participate in academic curricula distinguished by direct contact with faculty and an increasing international emphasis that prepares them for a global future.
