SDSU Japanese Language Students Honored with Scholarship Support

SAN DIEGO, Wednesday, May 31, 2000 - Seventeen San Diego State University Japanese language students with outstanding academic performance received special recognition from San Diego's corporate community earlier this month when they were selected for honors and scholarships.
Ten students received scholarships totaling $2,800 for outstanding performance in Japanese language classes from Kyocera International, Deloitte & Touche and Tohmatsu & Co.
Matthew H. Sheldon, SDSU international business major, received a $1,000 17th Annual Kyocera Japanese Scholarship. The winner of the 14th Annual Deloitte Touch Tohmatsu International Japanese Scholarship for accounting majors was Henry H. Yamaoto, who majors in Japanese in addition to accounting.
The 15th Annual Kyocera Best Student Awards and stipends ($100 per winner) were presented to Mark J. Bala, electrical engineering; Va J. Luon, electrical engineering; Kyunggo Song, international business; Damon V. Serochi, political science/Japanese; Janis T. Ilano, marketing; Stacy L. Tate, sociology; Shu-Ju Chien, international business; and Gabriela Olszewska, undeclared.
Seven additional students were honored by the Japanese Language Program for their outstanding achievement in each class including Jennifer D. Jamora, marketing; Chiquita M. Vinson, international business; Vanessa A. Starr, graphic design; Sean P. Kennedy, Japanese; Ciani N. Palencia, microbiology; James B. Vahl, biology; and Jane L. Cocoba, English.
Dr. Dan McLeod, professor emeritus, was also recognized for his generous support for the Japanese Language Program. Dr. McLeod donated $3,000 in November 1999 and pledged to donate an additional $3,000.
