SDSU Donor Highlights For 1999-2000

Private gifts to San Diego State University generally fall into one of four areas: 1) academic programs and instruction, 2) faculty support, 3) student support and 4) learning environment. Donor highlights include:
Academic Programs and Instruction
* QUALCOMM Incorporated pledged $6 million to SDSU over the next 3 years; The Entrepreneurial Management Center in the College of Business Administration will receive $3 million and the Center for Mathematics & Science Education/College of Education will share $3 million.
* Bob Payne's lead $1.1 million pledge is allowing SDSU to launch the HTM Program this Fall.
* Maurice and Charmaine Kaplan's $50,000 gift has enabled SDSU to move forward with a remodeling of the furniture design area. The Kaplans also gave $120,000 to other university programs last year.
* The Coca-Cola Foundation gave its first gift of $25,000 to SDSU for scholarships for economically disadvantaged students, and followed with the first $100,000 of a $300,000 donation as part of its national initiative, "Keeping Kids in School." The foundation's grant will fund a financial literacy and entrepreneurship program at Hoover High School, run by Dr. Craig Dunn, Professor of Management in the College of Business Administration.Faculty Support
* Thomas and Audrey Pine, through their family foundation, made a $600,000 pledge to fund the Thomas G. Pine Endowed Professorship in Computer Engineering. Thomas Pine is an alumnus, a successful entrepreneur and a winner of a distinguished alumni award.
* Six local hospitals/health systems have pledged $1.3 million over the next 3 years to the SDSU School of Nursing and College of Health and Human Services as part of the "Nurses Now" partnership. The funding will help ease the nursing shortage in San Diego by allowing SDSU to hire six additional faculty and enroll 120 new nursing students over the next three semesters.Student Support
* SDSU realized a $1 million bequest from the estate of John Warren Terhune for the creation of endowed scholarships for economics and political science.
* Dr. Bernard Lipinsky, continued his support of SDSU and education with $166,223 to various campus programs including: Alumni Association Scholarships, the Thomas B. Day Freshman Success Program Endowment, the Lipinsky Institute for Judaic Studies, and the Jewish Historical Society Archives Endowment.
* Chuck Cotton and Henry "Bud" Metzger, through a gift annuity, gave an additional $70,000 to their endowed scholarship fund for gay and lesbian students.
* In his ongoing support of SDSU, William Leonhard Jr. pledged $300,000 to the College of Engineering to establish undergraduate and graduate scholarships. His parents, William Leonhard, Sr. and Wyllis Leonhard, followed his lead with a $400,000 gift, to establish a donor advised fund in the College of Engineering.The Learning Environment
* The SDSU College of Education established a partnership with the America's Schoolhouse Council to create the National Center for the 21st Century Schoolhouse at SDSU. The America's Schoolhouse Council, which consists of 7 leading school design firms, is providing $500,000 as part of the partnership.
* John and Becky Moores gifted $12.3 million to construct the Aztec Athletic Center.###
