Overview:
The National Center for the 21st Century Schoolhouse will serve as a clearinghouse of ideas on school design and educational programming for educators, policymakers and design professionals. A public-private partnership, the center will facilitate a focused discussion of the interrelationship between educational programming and school design.
School Construction Facts:
* The National Education Association (NEA) reports that an estimated $322 billion is needed to repair and modernize America's school buildings
* Altogether, education institutions operate and maintain 264,467 separate buildings in the United States. About 75 percent of these buildings were built before 1971 (U.S. Department of Education and American School & University).
* To accommodate student growth projections, which is approximated to be 48 million students by 2008, the U.S. Department of Education estimates that 6,000 new schools need to be constructed by 2006 - a cost of $73 billion.
* Total expenditures for public school districts in 1998-99 were $324 billion. Approximately 15 percent, or $48.6 billion, were for facilities (U.S. Department of Education and American School & University).
Budget: $1,341,750 over three years

* Maintaining a national database of accurate planning, construction and regulatory data

* Promoting productive interrelationships
* Coordinating highly visible national forums on critical educational programs/school facility issues
