Summer Camp for Engineers
San Diego, CA, June 24, 1999 A select group of San Diego County high school juniors begin laying the foundation for careers as engineers this summer, earning college credit and real-world work experience in an innovative program sponsored by San Diego State University and the Department of the Navy.
The 20 participants in the Engineering Science Residential Program (ESRP) were selected from more than 100 applicants for the intensive, six-week working research experience. Students live in SDSU residence halls through the week and attend lectures on campus in the mornings. Afternoons are spent working alongside engineers at the Navy's SPAWAR facility. In years past, the research projects have included a robotic prototype that responds to voice commands and submarine detection equipment.
A variety of enrichment projects take place on campus in the evening, including role-model speakers, cultural and recreational activities and college-preparation tutorials. The program concludes with a graduation ceremony where students display their projects in a science fair environment. Students receive a $1,050 stipend for their participation in the program.
