International Scholars To Explore Problems / Offer Solutions at Asian Studies Pacific Coast Conference

SAN DIEGO, CA, June 14, 1999 -- San Diego State University will look more like the United Nations when the University hosts a gathering of scholars from 16 countries, June 14 to 20, at the Asian Studies Pacific Coast Conference.

Dr. M.C. Madhavan, chair of the Asian Studies department at SDSU, is excited about the opportunity the faculty, administration, and students will have to learn about a variety of issues involving Asia.

"Some of the greatest minds in the world will be exploring causes and solutions to important issues such as the nuclear situation and democratization in Asia," said Madhavan. "Another key topic will be how Asian stock markets affect the world economy."

The historic meeting will include many world-renowned scholars and leaders of diverse backgrounds. The array of participants includes Venerable Man Jen, leader of Canada's Buddhist community; Robert Caldwell, editor of the San Diego Union-Tribune; Marc Galanter, President of Law and Society in the U.S.; Prabhakar Narvekar, former Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund; and Sanford Lakoff, ecomomics professor at the University of California at San Diego.
The scholars will explore more than 40 issues, including Law and Society in Asia in the 21st Century, Taiwan in the New Millennium, Emerging from the Asian Economic Crisis, Spreading Democracy in East Asia, and The Effects of American Colonial Policies on Philippine Democracy.
