Latinos and Education: Focus of Summit in East County

 

WHAT: Representatives from San Diego State University, the San Diego County Department of Education and Cajon Valley Union School District will talk about the educational attainment of Latinos and the barriers they encounter in getting an education. Among the invited panelists are Dr. Alberto Ochoa, chair of the Department of Policy Studies in Language and Cross- Cultural Education at San Diego State University and Rosalia Salinas, from the San Diego County Department of Education. Dr. Ochoa will speak about the Latino student dropout while Ms. Salinas will focus on the implementation of Proposition 227, a state-approved initiative that eliminated bilingual education in California earlier this year.

WHEN: 9:00 a.m., Saturday, November 7.

WHERE: Cajon Valley Middle School Auditorium, 395 Ballantyne St. (Take 8 East and exit on Magnolia Street. Turn right on Magnolia and take it to Park. Make a left on Park and it takes you straight to the school.)

BACKGROUND: The Latino Education Summit is sponsored by the East County Chapter of the San Diego Latino Coalition on Education, created in June 1997 to establish a permanent support and advocacy network to increase the educational aspirations and achievement of Latino students in San Diego County.
