When the thirty high school students graduate tonight from San Diego State University,s Engineering & Science Residential Program (ESRP), they will have more to show for their efforts than college credit and a $1,050 stipend. In conjunction with program co-sponsors Qualcomm and the U.S. Navy, the students will unveil the projects they have labored on when most of their contemporaries have been enjoying summer vacations.

The projects offer great photo opportunities, including a robotic prototype that responds to voice commands and equipment to detect submarines in shallow waters. The students will be presenting these and other projects in a "science fair environment to allow those in attendance more easily view them.

ESRP participants met rigid academic prerequisites to enter the program, and represent the best and brightest of San Diego County,s science students preparing to fill the demands of the high-tech world they will inherit. The project demonstrations begin at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina, 1380 Harbor Island Drive, San Diego. In addition to the students, SDSU president Stephen Weber, officials from the Navy,s SPAWAR Systems Center and representatives from Qualcomm will be available for interviews.
