Acclaimed conductor explores the connection between poetry and music
James DePreist, music director and conductor of the Oregon Symphony, will explore the connection between music in poetry in the Sixth Annual John R. Adams Lecture in the Humanities at San Diego State University.
DePreist, who trained under Leonard Bernstein and began his career with the New York Philharmonic, is an internationally renowned conductor. He has worked with some of the most notable philharmonics in the world, including those in Rotterdam and Monte Carlo, and his leadership of the Oregon Symphony has made it, in the words of one critic, “an orchestra of regional significance, worthy of national, even international attention.” He has also joined with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic to do extensive recordings of the compositions of Shostakovich.
DePreist will speak at SDSU’s Aztec Center on Monday, November 9, 1998, at 3:30 p.m. A reception will follow.
