Decision reversed -- SDSU Admits 271 Transfer Students

Two hundred seventy-one applicants who received a confusing series of letters regarding their admissions status for the Spring 1999 semester at San Diego State University will be admitted, after all.

SDSU President Stephen L. Weber has written to the transfer students, who were first denied admission, then provisionally admitted, then again denied admission, because their grade point average in community college work fell below 2.8. The average, which is higher than that required of applicants who meet standards for the California State University system, was set as part of SDSU's first effort to implement enrollment management.

SDSU was granted permission to control its enrollment in May, 1997 as a means of balancing available resources against increasing demand by students who want to pursue their higher education on the campus.

In his letter, Weber apologized "for the confusion surrounding your admission" to SDSU and accepted responsibility for the University's handling of the situation. "This spring semester is the first time that we have implemented enrollment management. I do not have to tell you (because you experienced it directly) that we did it very badly," Weber added.

"I have reconsidered (and) have decided to admit you to the University for the Spring 1999 semester," Weber concluded.
