SDSU Kicks Off Largest Reading Assistance Program in California
Over 100 San Diego State University students today began teaching elementary school children to read. The students are taking part in the America Reads Tutor Program, the largest reading assistance program in the state of California with an annual budget of 250,000.
Through the program, SDSU students tutor elementary school children 20 hours a week in under-represented communities in the San Diego area. This year, 120 SDSU students will assist over 500 children 5-8 years of age from 27 schools in the National and San Diego Unified School districts. (GREAT PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES)
"This is a great chance for you to develop as professionals and make a difference in people,s lives," SDSU President, Stephen L. Weber, told the students as they received their school assignments during the launching of the program.
"You are doing a service they (the students) cannot repay you for," said Dr. Eloisa Cisneros as she welcomed the tutors into San Diego Unified School District schools. "You are helping them find pleasure in reading. Thank goodness for America Reads."
