SDSU Announces César Chávez Memorial Scholarship Recipients
On Friday, December 4, the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at San Diego State University will officially announce the three 1998 winners of the César Chávez Memorial Scholarship. This $300 dollar scholarship is awarded yearly to upper-division SDSU students who best exemplify the ideals of community service for which César Chávez stood. This year’s recipients will be honored at a 1:00 p.m. ceremony in the patio of the Adams Humanities Building on the SDSU campus. The 1998 César Chávez Scholarship winners are:
Linda Olivia Gómez, a double major in Social Science and Spanish, has worked as a volunteer for her local church’s catechism school for the past three years. She has also volunteered in citizenship campaigns in Los Angeles geared towards Spanish-speaking immigrants. Gómez, whose goal is to be a Spanish and social studies teacher at the high school level, is a teaching assistant at San Ysidro Middle School.
Eduardo Estrada is majoring in Chicana and Chicano Studies and Sociology with the hopes of getting a masters degree in counseling. For the past five years, Estrada has worked for project SELF, a leadership training program. In high school, he was president of both MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán) and Upward Bound and was actively involved in organizing toy and clothing drives for children.
Claudia Ramírez, a Social Science major, plans to be a high school teacher for inner-city youths. At SDSU, Ramírez has worked as a volunteer for Izcalli, a Saturday school for high-risk students. She is also the secretary for the Future Educators of America Club and devotes time to recruiting students to SDSU.
The César Chávez Memorial Scholarship was established five years ago with donations to the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department. For more information, please contact Dr. Richard Griswold del Castillo at (619) 594-6447.
