Changes transforming Israel will be the topic of guest lecture

Dr. Calvin Goldscheider, an expert on the impact of ethnic populations on Israel, will present "Israel's Changing Society" at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 15, at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, 4126 Executive Drive, La Jolla.

His lecture will draw upon his most recent book, "Israel's Changing Society: Population, Ethnicity, and Development." He also is the author of "The Population of Israel, The Transformation of the Jew," and "Jewish Continuity and Change: Emerging Patterns in America."

Dr. Goldscheider, the Dorot Professor of Judaic Studies at Brown University, received his M.A. and Ph.D. from Brown University where he has chaired the Department of Sociology. Previously, he chaired the Department of Demography at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

His lecture is the thirteenth annual Robert Siegel Memorial Lecture presented by the Lipinsky Institute of Judaic Studies in the College of Arts and Letters at San Diego State University.

The family and friends of Robert Siegel established the lecture in 1985 in recognition of his commitment to Jewish education and his contributions to the community. These included many years of leadership on the boards of the Jewish Community Center, the San Diego Dental Society, and The Hebrew Home for the Aged.

The Siegel Memorial Lecture is part of the San Diego Jewish Book Fair presented November 14 - 17 at the Center. For further information about this lecture, call 594-5338. For further information about Book Fair events, call 457-3161.
