Youth Development Conference at SDSU Prepares Latino High School Students for College
What college entrance exams must I take? Why do I need to take them? What are colleges and universities looking for in an applicant? Should I attend a two-year community college or a four-year university? If you are a college-bound high school student and do not know the answers to these andother higher education questions, San Diego State University will provide them for you at its Youth Leadership Development Fair on Friday, September 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at SDSU,s Open Air Theater.
The conference is expected to attract more than 1000 college-bound Latino high school students from Southern California. Also present at the fair will be several distinguished speakers, among them, Brigadier General Michael J. Aguilar, one of the highest-ranking Latinos in the United States Marine Corps. (He will be available for interviews)
The fair is also part of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) Annual Conference to be held in San Diego September 25-30. The youth conference will consist of a series of workshops including the following:
· College Entrance Exams: Why Do I Need to Take Them?
This forum will teach you about the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) and the ACT (American College Testing Program) and what you can do to prepare for them.
· Financial Aid: The What, When and How of College Aid
This workshop will introduce you to financial aid forms used for figuring financial need as well as the kinds of financial aid awarded by Institutions and major federal and state government programs.
· College Life: Making All the Right Moves
A panel of current students will share their best advice, strategies and their experiences in college.
Youth Development
· Choosing a College: Making the Right Decision
Is a two-year community college or a university best for me? This seminar will provide basic information on planning your college education and deciding which campus is right for you.
· Interviewing Skills: The Winning Game
This workshop will prepare you for all types of interviews by presenting the interview process, dressing for success, preparing for the interview, key questions you will be asked and the follow-up process. Come learn how to be successful at the interviewing game.
"The objective (of the conference) is to connect students to the idea that staying and finishing High School and attending college is something attainable and that the support is there for them", said Gus Chavez, director of the Office of Educational Opportunity/Ethnic Affairs at SDSU.
