SDSU Puts Enrollment Management Into Effect
Weber cites "higher expectations" of incoming students
Increasing applications at San Diego State will require the university to implement its new enrollment management authority for the first time in the Spring, 1999 semester, according to SDSU President Stephen L. Weber.
"We must limit the number of undergraduate students we admit if we are to serve our enrolled students well and protect the quality of our academic programs, " Weber explained. "SDSU expectations of its applicants and its students will continue to increase," he added.
The action will limit the number of undergraduate students admitted to SDSU's San Diego campus. The Imperial Valley Campus at Calexico is not affected. Due to the increased quality of all applicants, SDSU will be able to raise its academic admissions standards to match the number of students admitted to the available resource and maintain its commitment to diversity and opportunity, Weber said.
The campus was granted permission to limit its enrollment in May, 1997 by then-CSU Chancellor Barry Munitz.
"We take this action," said Weber, "because the campus continues to attract large number of students as a result of our increasingly strong academic reputation. Our Fall semester enrollment is already well over our target, and the number of applicants for the Spring semester is at the highest point in many years."
Fall, 1998 semester enrollment for the main campus is 31,453 at census, an increase of 3% over the same period in 1997.
Undergraduate applications for the Spring 1999 semester total 5,569, up from 5,219 for the Spring, 1998 semester, and 4,216 for the Spring, 1997 semester.
Under enrollment management, the university will admit the most academically qualified students eligible to the California State University, as well as some CSU-eligible students who will be individually screened.
Students who are not admitted will be helped to identify alternative CSU campuses, including CSU San Marcos, or advised to attend a community college.
