SDSU Faculty-in-Residence--they bridge gap between students’ academic and residential life
They take their meals with students, offer advice on notetaking, conduct workshops on time management, and join in conversations about current events or the latest movies.
They’re the FIRs--participants in the Faculty-in-Residence program. These faculty live in campus residence halls; enjoy daily, informal contacts with students; and help students learn how to interact with their professors.
This year, there are six faculty members from various departments living in different residence halls and participating in the program.
They are Steve Barbone, philosophy; J.Angelo Corlett, philosophy; Douglas H. Deutschman, biology; Michael I. Loewy, counseling and school psychology; Mark Richard Wheeler, philosophy; and Derry-Joe Yakubu, educational technology.
Three of the six participants this year are returning FIRs, including Wheeler, who is in his third year as a member of the Faculty-in-Residence team.
In addition to their regular teaching assignments, these faculty members spend much of their "free" time engaged in a broad range of activities designed to enrich the residential education of students living on campus. They present topics of special interest to residents, and they also facilitate the involvement of other faculty.
The program, now in its sixth year, is coordinated through the SDSU residential education division of the Housing and Residential Life Office.
