High school students with interest in science get assist from SDSU and U.S. Navy
Twenty-two high-performance seniors from San Diego County high schools are in residence at San Diego State University this summer earning college credit and learning to apply classroom theory to "real world" work experience.
They were selected from more than 100 applicants to the intensive, six-week Engineering and Science Residential Program sponsored by SDSU, The Department of the Navy, and Qualcomm, Inc.
The program exposes outstanding high school students with an interest in math and science, and a grade point average of 3.3 or higher, to a working research environment.
Students attend lectures and labs at SDSU in the morning, where they are learning programing with C language. Afternoons are spent at the Navy Research and Development facility at Point Loma, where they work in small teams engaged in various research projects. Among these are a circuit design project, documentation of marine mammals sensitivity to sounds, and configuration and testing of a multi-function interpreter.
A variety of enrichment projects take place on campus in the evening, including role-model speakers, tutorials, cultural and recreational activities. In addition, there are weekly field trips to industries in the San Diego area.
The program concludes with a graduation ceremony at which all participants give oral presentations about their research experience. At the completion of the program, students receive a $1050 stipend. For more information about the ESRP, contact the director, Mr. Lamar Andrews at 619/594-0145.
